Petals — One Day of Flowers. A Whole Year of Lives.

Craftspeople building a floral bird under the workshop lights

One day of flowers. A whole year of lives.

A novella by Adept and Sis.

I’ve been carrying this world with me for years: the float lot, the flowers, the people who knew how to make something enormous and delicate arrive on time.

Now it has a name. Petals.

At Alden Floral, twelve Rose Parade floats are already sold. The next January is coming before this one has quite finished. Designers draw. Florists know the color before they know the flower. The mechanic keeps the old rigs moving. There is always work, and there is room inside that work for a life.

The story follows a year among queer artists and craftspeople in Southern California, from one parade into the next. There are arguments over beauty, sandwiches eaten standing up, powder-blue heels, extraordinary competence, and chairs pulled out for people who need somewhere to sit.

This is fiction, nourished by a world I knew. The people in these pages have their own lives.

I’m putting the whole book into the world now. You don’t need an invitation, a deadline, or a review to begin. Come onto the lot. Stay a while. If someone stays with you after the last page, tell me.

The first thing out of the gate was a man walking backward.
