Wave That Funk at Unc! — A Southern Porch on the Pacific

Long Beach, some of y’all found me watching that storm roll through. You came for the water, the weather, and whatever the Pacific was getting up to. Glad you stayed.

I’m your Unc Adept. And I’ve got an invitation for you.

When you see me on the balcony, wave. That’s it. Throw your hand up. I’ll throw mine back.

My father’s people came from Alabama. My mother’s from Georgia. In our families, sitting outside at the end of the day meant you acknowledged the people passing by. A wave to a car. A hello to somebody walking. Sometimes they stopped. Sometimes they kept right on going.

Either way, we’d seen each other.

Back in 2015, I carried that habit to the end of my Altadena driveway. Took my observing chair, Stargazer, and started waving.

That chair had already helped me explore the universe. I had a ten-inch telescope, binoculars, and an observing diary. Then I turned my attention toward another universe: the neighbors.

I wondered whether Los Angeles would wave back. Well, people circled their cars around. Children wanted their parents to drive past. Bus drivers and passengers joined in. Amy the jogger became a friend.

Within a week, I’d made at least ten new friends. Somebody even asked about bringing a second chair.

Now that’s when you know you’ve got something. Somebody wants to sit beside you and join the welcome.

The Eaton Fire destroyed our home. Stargazer burned on the porch. My telescope equipment, observing diary, and years of records were among the losses.

I miss what we lost. The chair burned. The invitation didn’t.

Sweetie and I traveled across North America, and eventually found our new home here in Long Beach. We call it the Node.

It terraces toward the beach, with balconies looking out over the Strand and the Pacific. People walk, jog, cycle, and carry on with their day right in front of us.

I’ve got my chair, my beverage, and my music. A Southern porch on the Pacific. And this view can wave back.

One Fourth of July, I went outside thinking about a car parked by a tow-away sign. Met a father and son who’d come for the fireworks.

That could have been a very short conversation about parking. Instead, it turned into pizza, Sweetie’s charcuterie, fresh figs, and fireworks over the water.

Y’all come through. Sometimes a little room for somebody changes the whole evening.

Then there’s Jordan. I met her selling her rolls from a wagon on a Long Beach sidewalk. Showing up, setting up, and betting on herself.

So I bought. Jordan runs 4C Rolls N Sweets, and she’s also a caregiver. Taking care of people in more ways than one.

And that sweet potato roll? That wasn’t dessert. That was ancestral technology.

Communities get stronger when we support people who are building something of their own. Sometimes connection looks like a wave. Sometimes it tastes like cinnamon.

I remember names. Ask about somebody’s world. Say hello to the dog, too. I go out with my grabber and pick up litter around our frontage. We share this place. Might as well take care of it, and each other.

When I taught, a high-five with Mr. Johnson meant we’d shared a purpose. Students could come back years later and throw that hand up again.

Membership never expires.

That’s the spirit of the Festival of Continuous Funk. No schedule. No registration. No ticket. Just an invitation that’s there when the opportunity presents itself.

You don’t have to know me. You don’t have to stop. You don’t have to agree with a thing I say. And you certainly don’t have to like whatever I’m playing.

Just throw your hand up. I’ll throw mine back.

Maybe next time we’ll know each other’s names. Maybe something wonderful will happen that neither of us planned.

Admission is free. Membership never expires.

Long Beach—wave that Funk at Unc!

Go show Jordan some love at 4C Rolls N Sweets. Follow her and DM to order: 4C Rolls N Sweets on Instagram

I first wrote about this porch habit in 2015. The welcome is still open.

A Waving at the Neighbors Update

It's been a week since I decided to take my chair Stargazer Friendfinder to the end of my driveway and wave at everyone who passes by and I thought I'd give an update.

This is by far the most groovy thing I've ever done for myself. The street I live on is first of all very busy. It is the main east west drag in our hillside hamlet so I'm busy. I am getting one heck of a workout! You beauty queens out there I tip my hat an hour's serious HOWDY waving is a workout.

I have become a phenomenon that children ask their parents to drive by and then the parents come by themselves. I stopped counting the frowns turned upside down I've caused. I believe I have dropped the average speed from warp 4 to mere impulse power on my little piece of the drag, and become an inspiration to the service club High School age kids looking for something to do.

I have made at least 10 solid friends I now know the names of and have moved past simple greeting to making human connection and within the next couple days I fully expect to have to bring out another chair for Stargazer because I’ve had a person ask if they could wave with me and I wholeheartedly accepted. Professional drivers are the most fun as I love air horns and I think the bus drivers on my route have begun announcing me because everyone on the bus now waves at me.

After one week.

Do I think this is for everyone? No, I’m a sales person who if when I cold called returned a positive result of whenever someone met my eyes I made a sale I’d be richer than Roosevelt so I’m not daunted by small rejections. Do I think it’s an excellent way to put yourself out there in anticipation of some really sweet result? Absolutely

Namaste Friends.

Here’s the first posting.

Moms family is from Georgia, I’ve shown you Moms family earlier with the presentation of the documentary Palmour St., and Pops family gave me my Alabama memories.  I mention it because of a habit both sides of the family have.

When they get home from work, or get done with their day.  They will get them a beer or other bevie and everyone will go and sit on the porch and wave at every person and car driving by.

The people who are walking will generally stop and talk, the people in the cars always wave and display nice friendly smiles.

Well yesterday I was yelling at something political that had pissed me off and something made me think “I bet these people where I live wouldn’t even wave back if I did the southern thing”.  I live on a very busy street the most busy in my area of the town, so I thought no one would care we’re LA after all and a challenge was born.

First the music I would pick a piece and I would wave all the way through it, and I know what I will use

Yeah that's me for the assignment next?

The Chair

STARGAZER

I set up for two way waving because that's how I roll.

I will now relay the results.

I apologize to my town for thinking it might not be friendly.  Oh my goodness, I don’t know how I’m going to be able to end my evening without doing this I didn't remember how good it felt.

I saw people who just didn’t see me, and the way people haul booty down my street I didn’t blame them.  Every single person who saw me waved.

2 separate men in pick up trucks who saw me saw my wave and didn’t think I saw them wave back drove around the corner to wave.  One stopped and asked if I were just waving and when I said yes told me that was just beautiful and that lit my heart.

I made a new friend in Amy the jogger I had seen many times running by my house and now know she’s a neighbor cooler than the other side of the pillow and yes she and her cool husband would love to drop by for a glass of vino and conviviality.

It’s my normal nature to count the wavers or something to keep my mind busy, but I didn’t have to.  Get down my city I’m proud of you, I was kept busy meeting you. I understand it might rain tomorrow, so nope, but whenever it’s not raining I think I’ll give Stargazer a last name.  Stargazer Friendfinder

Musings from the Fair

The following is a Twitter stream of consciousness I discovered made a blog.

I share myself openly because I am not afraid.

I had another sales job I loved before. I worked for a company that produced job fairs for the individual NAACP orgs around the country. We held shows in 25 odd cities about 50 shows a year we would sell 75 to 100 booths a show we would charge 6000 dollars a piece for. It was a staff of 4 that traveled and put on a show and there were 10 sales people I was one of two black ones. Yo the man who ran the show paid on commission and you don't work commission like that unless you're Splinter level sales. So wed travel each sales person did 15 shows cause we never kept sales people I did tons of shows travelling is FUCKED after you do it 3 mos. We would have lines completely qualified Negroes going up and down city blocks google the NAACP high tech and diversity job fairs back when. I made it my job to grab a box of show brochures and I greeted. Chicago did you go to the NAACP job fair?
Did a kind black man give you pointers

That was me all across america

EVERY PERSON THAT CAME TO THE JOB FAIR

Wished them good luck

That is why you CAN NOT TELL ME THERE ARE NOT THOUSANDS IN EVERY CITY QUALIFIED NEGRO. Had the VP of Halliburton tell me there were none, and I knew he was a lying motherfucker cause he hired 3, wonder why he lied? Oh yeah VP of Diversity oh hai remember me? Why did you spend 100K of your companies money and not send any recruiters? Fuck you 15 years later. So on Sept 6 beautiful fucking day in S. Cal I'm thinking FUCK another show in NYC I DON'T WANT TO GO. new rep in the office says ME! Cool I'll go play with Sweetie and my baby, I'm gonna bounce from Shomex anyway. He'll handle my clients etc. and guess what happens on the day of the show 9/11 Madison Square. Garden? Oh we know what happened my replacement was preparing for the show when the planes hit. The crew that handled the show were trapped in NYC for 2 weeks it was a travelling circus the entire show was trapped in NYC. My brother Mr. Lewis Shomer may God Bless and protect that Jew who ran the show because no fucking body else did could not float 3 shows. and thus went down the NAACP High Tech and Diversity Job Fairs. Oh if you run an NAACP branch out there and you're accepting a funky 5K to brand your show in your town?

YOU ARE STUPID.

Oh are you involved in the @NAACP want to join the http://www.brilliantbridge.org  I'll tell you everything I know about running a job fair FOR FREE

The Veil

I could take the ideas and practices that are being instituted and package them for sale to marketing organizations as a Salesman’s EST progam that works and make millions.

I don’t want to make money I want to increase Universal Serendipity

That doesn’t mean the goals and principles of the Brilliant Bridge do not require the energy of money they do.  The Café will be physical locations like clubhouses, The Reconciliation and Truth facility will eventually require office staff and experts.  The #BlackSeder will need publication and greater organization. I LIKE TO EAT.

What it does mean is that the Brilliant Bridge never intends to solicit money.

Not for the food or coffee we’ll serve in the café or for any of the blessings of information or time we hope to store up in the furtherance of the goal of the increase of Serendipity.

When I think expansively and imagine what Brilliant Bridge will be when all grown up I see health, fitness, wellness, childcare, spirit care, all being attached as hubs to the café a place where we can grow the family I outlined earlier.

Did I mention one of the first things I envision doing for people who join us on the Brilliant Bridge is to send them on a week’s vacation where they never touch their wallets, and a beverage appears just because they shake their glass?  No dogma no promises involved in going, no hoops to jump through just vacate, I hope we send a million people on vacation

Ah the dreams one has for ones baby.

We don’t intend to ever make contributions made through the veil public.  We don’t intend to offer tax breaks as any incentive to contribute.  The only promise we can make is that the contributions will be used to increase Serendipity.

Do you have excess means?  Do you have a few bucks?  Do you have a few million bucks?  Throw it through the Veil and see the increase

Soon as the Brilliant Bridge  is old enough this veil utility will be absolutely open source including how much I take out of it however for now I humbly thank you for any monetary energy you’d like to share with this idea.

COME MEET THE NEW BABY!

You can say I’ve been very pregnant for more than a few years now. Those who are close enough to know me have seen some of the pains of my labors as evidenced in some reorientation of how I think and my priorities.

Got so bad toward the end that I adopted avatars of female divinity in my social media interactions and Adept2u became very pretty but also ready to give birth.

I’d like you to meet the baby.

Brown Liquor Grown Folk Brilliant Bridge Poetry Corner

Here's another collection of haiku, but this time I collected them with a special purpose outside of my own trippy musings. I've begun a Facebook movement I'd like to see grow into real life and into lots of things called Brilliant Bridge our motto is

We are a band of optimists claiming our world back from the control of fear, time and money. We are siblings devoted to increasing Serendipity in life.

If that’s something you could stand behind please join us on the Bridge, but the reason for the collection is we have us a good old fashioned Brown Liquor Grown Folk Brilliant Bridge Poetry Corner happening, and as I threw the first rivet in the Bridge I’m playing!

I have an advantage I compose Haiku, but there’s no rule about how you can’t be poetic as a normal course of your day, in fact…I think it’s a Brilliant Idea.

4/15/15

My prince rambunctious
The world's to small to hold you
Grampy's arms will try

4/24/15

Be the Brilliant Bridge
A Butterfly Beats Its Wings
Launch a thousand ships

4/25/15

Black man oasis
Gotta tighten those edges
So fresh and so clean

4/30/15

Ah human hubris
Can't understand each other
God we can speak for

4/30/15

I sit in my yard
Imagining a concert
I got the aux cord

5/3/15

Serious business
Exploring the Universe
Lift off little man

5/4/15

Michael put it down
We danced most furiously
The Brilliant Bridge life

*Finger snaps*  Get you some of that.  Do you have to produce a multimedia extravaganza to participate?  NO!  leave whatever you want as a message to the group.  I’ll collect everything and make a blog out of it for publication as part of the normally Brilliant offerings.

What a great idea thanks to the Poet Laureate for providing Brilliant inspiration.

Brilliant Bridge

You are invited to join the Brilliant Bridge community and so are your friends and theirs.

GOOD MORNING BRIDGE BUILDERS
What is this place, this thing on Facebook?
It began with a vision I have for a place that will eventually have a Cafe added to the end of the name Brilliant Bridge, and be real. It can be thought of as the place of the voluntary eunuchs. Before you go hitting the unlike button that's part of my humor. I say voluntary eunuch because the very first rule is NO DICKS.

Sweetie doesn't think I'm funny either : P

The mission first and primarily is to unify behind a very simple concept. We're human. We love each other, and as social animals we find opportunities to reach out and commune with like minded individuals among the things we most fundamentally crave.
To that end the Brilliant Bridge will hopefully be one of those organizations that facilitate that desire. I see a place to gather people who will be relentlessly optimistic both on the internet and eventually in presence.  I hope to collect fellow Bridge Builders willing to support each other with the rivets and fasteners that comprise the construction of the Church of You.

The Cafe concept is an acronym. It means
Come
And
Free
Eat
The physical location will have no ability to accept money for the food we offer, and we will turn no one away. I am stealing here from a faith tradition of the Sikhs and the Langar they share before meeting.
There are lots of moving parts and I look forward to talking to anyone about anything.

Bridge Builder: Task for the next 30 days
Everyday find 10 random and unknown people walk up to them, say and then give them a high 5. That's right we're starting our crusade throwing high fives.
To the original construction crew mark you were here.
This is going to mean something
HIGH FIVE.
